Research has proven many times that the first three years of exploring and playing with books, singing nursery rhymes, listening to stories, recognizing words, and scribbling are truly the building blocks for language and literacy development. ZerotoThree, the national center for infants, toddlers and families in Washington DC offers parents a link to information about early literacy. Included in the two-page handout are characteristics, broken down by age group, of what young children like in books and ways to share books with infants and toddlers. I think this sheet would be nice to send along with a gift of books to new parents or grandparents.
